Welcome friends, lurkers and trolls (looking at you Jdrenarol). Today I have a simple question for you. What car had the biggest difference between 2 and 4 door versions of the same years? It can be a large mechanical difference, or simply a very different body (like my example). The best model I can think of is the AMC Matador. In particular the model years 1974-1978, or the second generation. The initial 1st gen cars had very similar coupes and sedans, but the 2nd generation, starting in ‘74, made the 2 and 4 door versions seem like completely different cars. The coupe was sleek and beautiful, while the sedan, at least in my opinion, was ugly and had the strangest from facia I think I have ever seen. Pics shown are Coupe from and back, than sedan front and back.

I think you nailed it right there .... The Pacer Wagon was ... 4 doors? Maybe not. But the Matador deserves first place.

In 1978 you could have this Aspen:
Or you could have this Aspen:

A modern equivalent to the matador, although I am not sure if it can count as I think it’s kind of a sub brand of Hyundai. Still a good entry though

A good one, although you can still see the resemblance in the front. They are like twins that grew up to be completely different. One is a boring accountant (green one) and one is a heavy metal singer (badass black one). They are different, but at the end of the day, they still have a resemblance.

Wasn’t Corolla offered in RWD and FWD for a year or two?
On the AMC side I can’t think of anything they could have done more wrong than Matador. They signed their own death certificate. The coupe was ok but quirky can only get you so far. And that nose on the sedan?

Liveries and non sketchyness don’t count. The cars appear to share panels from the windshield forward. There are no shared panels on the Matadors. If I hadn’t have said anything and just had you name both of the cars, I doubt you would have a clue that they are the same model. I know I wouldn’t. EDIT: Wait, was one RWD and one FWD? if so, good job. If not, you need to try a bit harder ;)

Ugh, I know. That nose is really strange. It looks pre crashed almost. Like they tried to fit through a very small space.

There’s a reason why one was in Initial D, and the other is often found rotting in a Walmart parking lot...

It being a sub-brand is a new thing, but the Genesis sedan and coupe existing simultaneously while being completely different has been going on for years.

And yet, I love them both. Even the sedan with its weird snout.
Actually, I love all three of them. You forgot the wagon.

Not a single panel swaps over. People have tried. Shared components include: Nuts and bolts, electrical connectors, and the radio. Completely dissimilar chassis structures.

These cars have same chassis. I know the Civic name was dropped off the Del Sol in 95, but from 92-94 this was a Civic, as well as a sedan, a regular coupe, and a hatchback.

Not sure what what we were talking about. As soon as I scrolled down to your AMC pictures my eyes started stinging and watering and my nose running. I had to run to the faucet to wash them out. Good thing I’m at work and have an eye wash sink for emergencies like acid spills. I’m back now. What was your question again?

1974 was the second year of the NHTSA “5 mph bumper” regulations, and that year added the rule that the bumper had to endure a corner strike without the lights being damaged. Designers were doing whatever they could to comply without resorting to just a big flat battering ram. Otherwise you got this:

It’s really Similar to the sedan though, so that’s why I left it out.

Nope. Different too. That was the first thing people tried.

Fun fact: the Toyota E8 series of cars had 5 or 6 different basic front ends being produced at any given time. If you factor in localized bumpers, we’re looking at 8 or more
